PA Amplifier & Speaker Matching Calculator

You don’t need to become an electrician or memorize a page of formulas. You need to know which specifications matter, where to find them, and how to compare them correctly.

Passive PA speakers Low-impedance systems Parallel wiring

STEP 1

What are you starting with?

AMP → SPEAKERS

Enter the amplifier’s specifications

Use the manufacturer’s watts per channel ratings—not bridged, peak, burst, or total-system power.

Amplifier output power per channel

Enter every rating the manufacturer publishes. The calculator will use the one matching your final load.

Before you connect anything

Match the exact load.

An amplifier’s 8-ohm rating cannot be substituted for its 4-ohm or 2-ohm rating.

Use continuous power.

Continuous, AES, and RMS are the relevant shopping specifications here. Program and Peak are not direct substitutes.

Protect the system.

Use appropriate DSP, limiters, high-pass filters, and gain structure according to the manufacturers’ instructions.

What this calculator does not cover

Powered speakers, bridge-mono operation, bi-amped cabinets, mixed speaker impedances or models on one channel, series wiring, 70V/100V distributed systems, transformer taps, subwoofer crossover design, and predictions of loudness or audience coverage.

Method and sources

The shopping target uses a common professional-PA planning window of approximately 1.5–2 times the combined continuous speaker rating, with 2 times shown as the preferred headroom target. The loudspeaker manufacturer’s recommended amplifier range always takes priority.

Planning tool only: Always verify the final impedance, amplifier power, wiring, DSP, and limiter settings in the current manuals for both products. Fixed installations and any work involving building power, rigging, fire code, or local electrical code should be reviewed and performed by the appropriately licensed contractor or qualified AV professional.
